IBM Informix Dynamic Server

The business environment today is changing at an ever-increasing rate. We must be flexible enough to change with it if we are to meet customer demands and shareholder expectations. This is the only way to enable growth and maintain business leadership. These changes can include such things as changing business processes, engaging new markets, developing and purchasing new business software, and maintaining a flexible and dynamic support infrastructure. This redbook is all about change, specifically to your IT support infrastructure, and in particular, to your database management system (DBMS), the foundation of that infrastructure. It is critical to have a DBMS that can house, organize, manage with integrity and deliver to you, on demand, the data that is collected and stored by your organization. But, in addition, your DBMS also needs to change with the business requirements. And, it needs to be enabled to a robust set of tools and applications that will enable the change and growth in your organization.

IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) is a leading DBMS and enjoys the support of many applications, solution components, and technologies. DB2 UDB has a broad base of customers and a long history of leading capabilities and high customer satisfaction. DB2 is a performance leader, a highly scalable DBMS capable of supporting the largest customer data volumes with a robust set of very powerful capabilities.

IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) has also enjoyed a history of quality, performance, and robust capabilities. As you are aware, IBM acquired Informix. IBM announced plans to continue support and enhancement of IDS and major Informix software products. IBM will integrate Informix compatibility features into DB2 UDB based on the feedback of our customers and Business Partners. To continue the history of excellent support for the IDS customer base and to enable them to grow and take advantage of available and planned software products, IBM is also supporting the capability to transition to DB2 UDB for those who choose to do so.

For Informix customers who are considering a transition, we recommend that you do so only when the result provides better value to you. We believe that you will gain maximum benefit if that transition is to DB UDB. Therefore, we provide information and tools to help make the transition to DB2 an easy and successful process. That is the objective of this book. As an example, we provide information about both DB2 UDB and IDS to help you understand the similarities and differences so that you can develop a detailed and robust transition plan.
